As we enter a new year I see all the usual talk of new year goals and healthy resolutions. Having something to aim for is a good thing and I encourage everyone to take a little time to think about what they want to achieve in 2019. What I don’t like seeing is the inevitable updates three weeks in to the year where many resolutions are now on life support or have fallen by the wayside altogether. Perhaps it’s the case that the resolutions being set are too big a leap and are not realistic for the individual to maintain.
Read MoreIt’s around this time every January that many New Year resolutions have begun to falter or have been totally ditched already. The second Friday in January is now known as “Quitters Friday” and Monday just passed has been dubbed “Blue Monday” as it’s apparently the most depressing day of the year. What a load of horsesh1t. They are just days of the week like any other day. I choose not to read into the nonsense that the tabloid media feel the need to perpetuate at this time of year.

These are our new or renewed goals and commitments to eating less, exercising more, spending less time in front of our devices and more time with our families, cleaning out our closets and setting up a system so they stay uncluttered. So many goals—so much frustration.
As a health coach, I have seen this time and time again. Smokers set their quit date on Jan. 1. People join a gym and proclaim they will get there at least 3 times a week—starting Jan. 1.
Read MoreI was feeling incredibly excited and energetic at the start of the year. I’d set my fitness and nutrition goals for 2016, chief among them being my target of exercising five times a week. I was ready to hit the ground running from the beginning of January and make 2016 my healthiest year on the planet to date! It all started so well on New Years Day with a tough trek through forest, farmland and mucky trails in the hills outside Florianopolis. Nothing better to shake off the lethargy and mild hangover on the first day of the year.
Read MoreHappy new year everyone! For my first article of the New Year I’m chatting with a friend of mine, Glenn Redding. Glenn set himself a serious fitness challenge for 2015 and I hope that reading his story here can inspire others to challenge themselves in 2016. I met Glenn on an overnight bus in India a few years ago. We went on to star in a Bollywood movie together on that same trip (seriously) and as Glenn said when I was chatting to him recently “I’m still kind of a big deal in Bollywood, Brian”. Glenn hasn’t let this superstardom go to his head though and in this article he answers my questions on the fitness challenge he set for himself last year. What challenge can you set yourself for 2016?

Read MoreAs the year draws to a close, once the merriment and revelry has died down, our thoughts and attention will turn to New Year resolutions. How many of us will have a health and fitness related resolution this time? How many of us will stick to it? I'm a big believer in making your exercises goals public and holding yourself accountable to them. It’s worked for me in the past and it has too for other guest posters on Office Worker Health. This week my colleague Mark Hillen is going public with his exercise goals for the New Year. Can you do the same?
