Ireland’s National Workplace Wellbeing Day

Friday April 8th 2016 is Ireland's second National Workplace Wellbeing Day. I’ve written previously about Promoting Workplace Wellness and about how both employers and employees can play their part in promoting a positive work environment so I’m delighted to help spread the word about this event as ultimately this day represents everything that this blog is about: Promoting health and wellbeing to sedentary workers.

Prioritise Your Sleep

Did you know that it's Sleep Awareness Week? Sleep is as important as exercise and nutrition in terms of our overall health but it's an area that's often overlooked. From a personal point of view, sleeping well improves our mood, our energy levels and can help us manage stress and depression. From a work perspective, a good nights sleep can spur our creativity, sharpen our focus and increase productivity.

Healthy Travel – Punta del Diablo

I finished up my travel in Uruguay with a visit to Punta del Diablo, a seaside village on the north eastern coast. It took me about 4 hours by bus from Piriapolis to travel the 200 kilometres up the coast to get to Punta del Diablo. I was edging my way ever closer to the Brazilian border; Punta is less than 50 kilometres from Brazil. I just had to stop in Punta though, I’d heard great reports about the sleepy fisherman village that turns in to a vibrant hub of activity during the summer months as increasing numbers of Argentinians, Brazilians, Uruguayans and western backpackers come to enjoy the beaches, waves and laid back vibe.

I’m learning more and more about health, fitness and nutrition every day and if you follow this blog then I know you are too.

For most of us, the answer is no, or sort of. Having clarity about what we want is not easy. We don’t typically slow down enough to know what we really want. We are pulled along by what others want from or for us – our partners, our children, our co-workers , our leaders – and by our human needs  –  to eat, sleep, move – and by the demands of the 24X7 world we live in, where something is always inviting us to give it our attention.

Gym Wars - Ireland v Brazil

I've been fortunate enough to spend time in gyms in both Ireland and Brazil recently and I've come to notice some interesting differences. The Brazilian model wins without question for me. It’s important to note I haven’t travelled the length and breadth of both countries researching this (interesting idea though). I'm basing my argument on about 10 gyms I've frequented in recent years in the Dublin area versus a couple of gyms in Rio de Janeiro and a handful more around Florianopolis in the south of Brazil.

So what makes the Brazilian approach win out?
